What to look for in DDR3 memory
Look closely at the spec sheet before pulling the trigger on your RAM setup.
- Capacity: Dial in just how much headroom you need for your memory, measured in gigabytes.
- Platform compatibility: You can use the filters on this page to confirm your RAM will work with what you’ve got.
- Speed and voltage ratings: Check for the speed ratings and tested voltage of the RAM.
- Design: While there aren’t as many options as newer generations, you can choose from a few different design options.
Is DDR3 RAM still good for gaming?
DDR3 is, admittedly, on the older side of RAM sticks available. As a result, you’ll definitely find lower speeds and lower capacities than newer counterparts. For instance, DDR5 RAM can deliver the highest speeds with a max rated capacity of up to 128 gigabytes. DDR3, on the other hand, maxes out at much lower speeds with only a 16-gigbyte capacity per stick. These shortcomings, however, mean that you can save a good bit of money going with an older RAM array. This is also great if you have older components that won’t work with newer RAM generations. Some PC builders even choose DDR3 RAM to incorporate overclocking or the Intel XMP protocol into their system.
